In recent days, the Noor Islamic Cultural Center and the community it serves have become the targets of a series of false accusations in a court filing to keep a central Ohio teenager separated from her family. The NICC categorically denies all allegations made against its community in the recent “Investigation and Intelligence Memorandum in Support of Petition for Dependency,” that was filed in the Florida Family Court system on August 31, 2009.
NICC records indicate that Rifqa Bary only attended the center’s Sunday School for three Sundays in 2007. NICC and its staff are not familiar with, nor have they had any contact with, Rifqa or her family. We sincerely empathize with Rifqa and her family, and we hope that outside groups will avoid interjecting hurtful agendas into this conflict and allow the family to reconcile their differences without interference.
This is a family law issue that is currently being handled by the Florida family courts. NICC believes that attempts to draw the Muslim Community into this conflict are a smoke screen hiding an effort to exploit Rifqa and her family. Unfortunately, hate groups appear to be using this family matter as an opportunity to attack the Muslim Community and Islamic Organizations in order to further their religious and political goals.
The Noor Islamic Cultural Center is the largest Islamic Center in Central Ohio. It opened its doors in 2006 to serve the Muslim Community and foster connections among people of all faiths. The Center is open 18 hours a day to all visitors and serves approximately 10,000 Muslims in Central Ohio as well as people of all faiths. This center is a resource for hard-working, law-abiding men and women in this community who come here to worship God and enrich their lives.
NICC promotes civic participation and good citizenship. Many elected officials and dignitaries have visited the center, and political candidates have presented their views at forums there. In the last presidential election, many central Ohio voters cast their ballots at NICC, a Franklin County polling precinct. The center has received visitors and speakers of Muslim, Jewish, and Christian faiths.
NICC has led and promoted efforts to open dialogue and strengthen ties among communities of all faiths through participation in many interfaith organizations, such as The Interfaith Association of Central Ohio, We Believe Ohio, Children of Abraham and other social organizations, such as BREAD.
The center serves the broader Central Ohio community by sponsoring many activities including health fairs, Red Cross blood drives, food pantries and free clinics. The center is also recognized as an official Franklin County polling precinct. The NICC welcomes people from all faiths and walks of life to visit our facility and experience what we do and what we teach.

Allah's Apostle said, "Amongst the trees, there is a tree, the leaves of which do not fall and is like a Muslim. Tell me the name of that tree." Everybody started thinking about the trees of the desert areas. And I thought of the date-palm tree but felt shy to answer the others then asked, "What is that tree, O Allah's Apostle ?" He replied, "It is the date-palm tree." -- Narrated Ibn 'Umar
