Ramadan Community Competition 2007
The final round of NICC's first Islamic Quiz and Qur'an Recital event took place on October 6 2007. The event started around 1 pm in the main prayer hall area and continued on until after Asr prayers. Over one hundred people were in the audience to support our finalists.
The first phase of the event was "Qur'anic Recital with Oration". Twenty-six finalists in four different age groups took part. A four-judge panel graded each contestant on Tajweed of their surah recitation. The public speaking skill of each contestant was also judged on the speech that each contestant orated on the embedded message of the recited surah. Contestants in Group I (ages to 7) prepared surah Al-Nas for the final round, while finalists for Group II (ages 8 to 11) were asked to prepare surah Al-Fil. Similarly, Group III (ages 12 to 15) was asked to prepare Surah Al-Qa'riah while the adult Group IV (ages 16 to 60) was given the first 10 ayahs of Surah Al-Rehman to prepare for the final.
Each candidate was given about 5 to 7 minutes for their performance. We saw some brilliant performances by our young Aalims which completely mesmerized the audience and judges. In the end every participant/finalist was given an equal cash prize and judges nominated a Tajweed Master and a Speech Masterin each age group. These nominees were given exceptional cups as a token of appreciation. Following are the respective winners of each age group.

For the Quiz round (event 3) cash prizes were given to 16 candidates who made it to the Hot Seat in the final. Each contestant was asked 10 questions from the list of questions given to them last week for final round preparation. A few younger candidates came extremely close to winning $100 but missed it by narrow margins. A several hundred dollars were paid out in total as cash prizes.

The prize ceremony was orchestrated towards the end, with presence of our guest of honor Sheikhs Hany Sakr - Director of NICC Activities. During this ceremony the 12 winners of Event 1 (Qur'an Recital with Tajweed only) from last week were also honored with personalized cups. Sheikh Hany also honored the judges and volunteers who helped coordinate the event. Personalized plaques too were given to all judges and volunteers, by the guest of honor.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "(The performance of) ‘Umra is an expiation for the sins committed (between it and the previous one). And the reward of Hajj Mabrur (the one accepted by Allah) is nothing except Paradise.” Sahih Bukhari
